Introduction to the IAL Specification

The Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level (IAL) in Biology is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of biological concepts, practical skills, and scientific methods. Topics Covered:

  • Water: Understand the importance of water as a solvent in biological systems.
  • Carbohydrates (Sugars): Learn about monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides, and their roles in energy storage and provision.
  • Lipids: Study the structure and function of triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesterol.
  • Proteins (including Enzymes): Explore the structure of amino acids, protein synthesis, enzyme activity, and factors affecting enzyme action.

Core Practicals:

  • Use Benedict’s reagent for estimating reducing sugars.
  • Investigate the effect of temperature, pH, enzyme concentration, and substrate concentration on enzyme activity.

Topics Covered:

  • Nucleic Acids (DNA & RNA): Understand the structure and function of DNA and RNA, including replication and transcription.
  • Protein Synthesis: Learn about the processes of transcription and translation, and the roles of mRNA, tRNA, and ribosomes.
  • Inheritance: Study patterns of inheritance, including monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, and understand the concepts of genotype and phenotype.

Core Practicals:

  • Investigate membrane properties, including the effect of alcohol and temperature on membrane permeability.
  • Use a light microscope to observe and draw cells.

Topics Covered:

  • Structure of the Heart: Learn about the anatomy of the heart and the cardiac cycle.

  • Cardiovascular Disease (Heart Disease & Treatment): Study the causes, risk factors, and treatments for cardiovascular diseases.

Core Practicals:

  • Investigate the structure of a mammalian heart by dissection.
  • Analyse and interpret data on cardiovascular health risks.
