The Plan That Actually Works (Backed by Real Specs, Real Boundaries)

What You’re Up Against

Edexcel IAL Chemistry remains modular for 2025–2026, with exam sessions in January, June, and October, as confirmed in the Pearson IAL Information Manual 2025–2026.

The current specification (2018 issue, still active) defines the exact content, assessment style, and command words for AS units WCH11–WCH13, available in the official Pearson IAL Chemistry specification.

For AS Chemistry, Units 1 and 2 are theory papers, while Unit 3 assesses practical skills. A clear breakdown aligned to teaching order is available at chem-bio.info AS Chemistry specification guide.

Unit What It Covers Exam Format Weight
WCH11 Stoichiometry, atomic structure, bonding, shapes, introductory organic chemistry 1h30m, ~80 marks 40% AS
WCH12 Halogenoalkanes, alcohols, energetics, equilibria, kinetics, Groups 1/2/7, analytical techniques 1h30m, ~80 marks 40% AS
WCH13 Practical skills from Units 1–2 ~1h20m, ~50 marks 20% AS

Why Unit 2 Feels Hard (And Why That’s an Advantage)

Unit 2 contains energetics, equilibria, kinetics, and multi-step calculations. These topics consistently carry higher mark density and are responsible for most lost marks. Specification topic lists and sample assessment materials show repeated testing of calorimetry, Hess cycles, and equilibrium calculations.

Historically, calculation-heavy papers tend to have slightly lower grade boundaries. While boundaries vary by session, the structure and reporting of boundaries are outlined in the Pearson IAL Information Manual. Mastering calculations early gives a real advantage.

Your 5-Month Track to June (AS Only)

Phase 1: Content Mastery (Weeks 1–12)

The sequencing below follows the official specification and the structured breakdown at chem-bio.info.

Weeks 1–4: Unit 1 (WCH11)

Electron configuration, periodic trends, bonding and shapes (VSEPR), alkanes and alkenes. These topics underpin later kinetics, equilibria, and organic mechanisms.

Weeks 5–11: Unit 2 (WCH12)

Halogenoalkanes and alcohols, intermolecular forces, analytical techniques (IR and MS), energetics calculations, Groups 1, 2, and 7 chemistry, titration calculations, kinetics, and equilibria. These areas dominate structured and calculation-heavy questions.

Week 12: Unit 3 Bridge (WCH13)

Titrations, ion tests, calorimetry, uncertainty, and evaluation, mirroring the practical skills listed in the specification.

Daily method:

Active recall and spaced practice are essential because AS Chemistry command words demand precise recall and application. Topic-organised classified questions aligned to IAL item types are available via IAL Chemistry solved past papers.

Phase 2: Past Paper Domination (6+ Weeks)

Each week:

One full AS set (Units 1–3), mapped directly to the assessment structure in the specification and sample assessments.

Three passes:

  • Pass 1 (open notes): Copy exact mark-scheme wording.
  • Pass 2 (timed): Build speed on calculations and short questions.
  • Pass 3 (exam conditions): Finish with time to check units and significant figures, which are explicitly penalised in mark schemes.

Target:

Aim for >90% in practice to buffer difficulty variation. The grade A threshold typically sits around 80% of the UMS equivalent, as explained in Pearson boundary documentation in the IAL manual.

High-Impact Topics You Must Drill

Calculations

Moles, concentrations, gas laws, yields, atom economy, calorimetry q = mc\Delta T, Hess cycles, Kc expressions, ICE tables, and rate calculations. All are specified repeatedly in the AS specification.

Organic Chemistry

Organic mechanisms, elimination, oxidation of alcohols, and reagent-condition recall. Mark schemes require exact wording and conditions.

Practicals (Unit 3)

Titrations (concordant titres within 0.10 cm³), uncertainty calculations, calorimetry improvements, and qualitative tests. Expectations are explicitly stated in the specification practical skills section.

Weekly Template That Stays Lean

  • Mon: One core topic + 30–40 classified questions aligned to the specification (chem-bio.info).
  • Tue: Mixed calculations set (moles, energetics, equilibria).
  • Wed: Practical skills question (planning or evaluation).
  • Thu: 45-minute mixed mini-paper using Sample Assessment Materials.
  • Fri: MCQs and short answers; log every error by cause.
  • Sat: Three longer structured answers using mark-scheme language.
  • Sun: Review error log and update flashcards with specification phrasing.

14-Day Kickstart (AS-Only)

Week 1

Stoichiometry, bonding and shapes, halogenoalkanes, alcohols, energetics basics, then a 60-minute mixed mini-paper.

Week 2

Hess cycles, IR and MS interpretation, kinetics basics, equilibria calculations, titration uncertainty, qualitative analysis, then a full AS paper (Units 1–3) under timed conditions. Target ≥80%.

Exam-Day Tactics That Save Marks

Mark schemes reward precise command-word responses, correct units and significant figures, and correctly drawn mechanisms with arrows starting from electron pairs. These conventions are shown clearly in Sample Assessment Materials included with the Pearson specification.

Resource Stack (AS Chemistry Only)

Final Checklist Before You Sit

You can derive Kc units correctly every time.

You can plan and evaluate a titration with percentage uncertainty.

You can complete Hess cycles quickly with correct definitions.

You know reagent-condition pairs and can draw mechanisms accurately.

You can justify an unknown using IR and MS with multiple linked data points.
