IAL October 2026 Results Date vs January 2027 Entry: Dates Table and Decision Checklist

Edexcel IAL January 2027 entry deadlines, late fees and the Biology and Chemistry exam dates laid against results day, 21 January.

Exam timetable for 8 to 22 January with results day sealed under an envelope, IAL October 2026

TL;DR: The IAL October 2026 results date is Thursday 21 January 2027, but the January 2027 Biology and Chemistry papers run from 8 to 22 January, so nine of the twelve science papers are sat before you see your October grade. That means a January resit has to be booked blind. Entries are still open at a late fee: the unit fee is doubled now and trebled from Saturday 14 November, which is also the last day Pearson refunds a withdrawn entry. Pearson counts the better of your two most recent attempts at a unit, not your best ever, so estimate your October UMS today, resit only the unit that is clearly short, and check you are not pushing a strong June result out of the pair.

When do IAL October 2026 results come out?

Edexcel IAL October 2026 results are released to students on Thursday 21 January 2027. Schools receive them a day earlier, on 20 January, under restricted release, and Pearson's 2026/27 key dates for International A levels say they may pass them on to you only from the 21st.

Pearson also posts the grade boundaries on its results dates, so 21 January is the first moment you can turn your raw mark into a UMS score with any certainty.

Why does that date matter so much? Because it does not fall before the January series. It falls in the middle of it.

If you do sit a January paper, those results come out on Thursday 4 March 2027, according to the same Pearson key dates document. Keep both dates in your calendar. You are going to need them in the checklist below.

Can I still enter January 2027 after the 16 October deadline?

Yes. The standard entry deadline for IAL January 2027 was Friday 16 October 2026, but your exam centre can still enter you as a late entry, at a higher fee. You cannot enter yourself: the request has to go through your school's exams officer or, for private candidates, the centre you sit at.

Here is how the fee changes, taken from Pearson's late entry rules for 2026/27:

  • From 17 October: late fees apply, and the unit fee is doubled.
  • From 14 November: high late fees apply, and the unit fee is trebled. Amendment fees also start, so changing a unit after this date costs extra.
  • Refunds: a withdrawn entry is refunded only up to 14 November. After that, Pearson gives no refund without medical evidence. A late entry withdrawn before 14 November gets back the entry fee only, not the late fee.

What does doubling and trebling look like in real money? The British Council in Qatar published it plainly in its January 2024 Edexcel IAL price list: a single Biology or Chemistry unit cost QAR 480 at the normal stage, QAR 1,010 at late stage one and QAR 1,540 at late stage two. Your centre's fees and cut-off dates will be different. The shape will not.

Note the calendar too. 14 November 2026 is a Saturday, and most centres close their own late window earlier than Pearson's. If you are going to enter, speak to your exams officer this week, not next.

Nine of the twelve January papers come before your October result

Of the twelve Biology and Chemistry units on the final January 2027 IAL timetable, nine are sat before 21 January, one (WCH15) is sat on the morning of results day, and only the two Unit 6 practical papers come after it.

If you want the full series laid out paper by paper, my January 2027 IAL timetable guide has every date and the double-exam days. Look at the AS rows here. Every AS resit in both subjects, Units 1, 2 and 3, is finished a full week before your October result reaches you.

So what does that mean in practice? You cannot wait for your result and then decide. By 21 January the decision has been made, the fee has been paid, and for most units the paper has been sat.

Put the two dates side by side and the real deadline appears. The refund window closes on 14 November. Your result arrives 68 days later. That's why the decision has to be made from an estimate of your October mark, not from the result itself, and that is exactly what the checklist in the next section is for.

Should I resit in January or move on to A2?

Decide from an estimate, not the result: work out roughly what your October paper was worth in UMS, compare it with the grade you need, and resit in January only if the unit is clearly short of it.

Every series, the same question reaches me in different words: should I try again, or keep what I got? Here is the checklist I give students who sat October and are looking at January.

Your decision checklist

  1. Write down every question you lost marks on, today. Do it while the paper is still fresh in your memory. Be strict with yourself, then add up a rough raw mark.
  2. Turn that raw mark into UMS. Use the Edexcel IAL UMS converter with the most recent boundaries as a guide. The October boundaries will not be published until 21 January, so treat your figure as a range, not a single number.
  3. Write down your target. That is the unit grade your university offer or your overall grade needs, not the grade you were hoping for. The IAL UMS calculator shows how many UMS you still need from your remaining units.
  4. Place yourself in one of the three cases below.
  5. Check your attempt history for that unit. If you have already sat it twice, read the resit rule before you enter, because a third attempt can push your earlier result out.
  6. Check the money and the window. Late fees are doubled until 13 November and trebled from 14 November.

Case one: clearly below target

If your estimate puts the unit a full grade below what you need, resit it in January. Why January and not June? Because a January unit banked is a unit you never have to revise again in May, when your A2 papers will need every hour you have.

Case two: borderline

If you think you are on the line, you have a real alternative to entering blind. The IAL entry deadline for June 2027 is Sunday 21 March 2027 for international centres, according to Pearson's 2026/27 entry deadlines. That is two months after your October result arrives. So you can wait for the real number on 21 January and still enter June at the standard fee.

Resit in January only if you can name the exact question types that cost you the marks and you are confident you can repair them in ten weeks. If you cannot name them, you are not ready for a January paper. Wait for the result and use June.

Case three: at or above target

If your estimate reaches your target, even by a single UMS, bank the unit and move on. Your January should go into A2 instead. Every A2 Biology and Chemistry unit, Units 4, 5 and 6, sits in the January 2027 series, and a structured A2 Biology course running through December gets you ready for 18, 20 and 22 January.

The mistake that wastes a resit

Many students resit by sitting the same preparation twice. They revise the same notes in the same way, and they end up with the same grade. The students of mine who improve in October or January are the ones who change how they prepare: they read their transcript, find the question types where the marks went missing, and repair those first. That diagnostic-first approach is why more than 40% of my students achieved a full UMS.

What does the Edexcel IAL resit rule say?

Pearson counts the better of your two most recent non-absent attempts at an IAL unit, as long as every attempt uses the same candidate number. It does not count your best result ever. That is stated in Pearson's resit rules for International A Level units, which also confirm that you can resit one unit at a time.

The number that links your attempts together is what we call the UCI, your unique candidate identifier. If you change school or sit at a different centre, make sure the same UCI is used. If it is not, your attempts are not matched.

Most students get the rule right for a second attempt. A second attempt cannot pull your unit down, because the better of the two counts. The trap is the third attempt.

Here is how it works. Say you sat WBI11 in June 2026 and got a b. You resat it in October, had a bad day and got a d. Now you enter January and get a c. Your two most recent attempts are October and January. The June b is no longer one of them, so the c counts. The best grade you ever earned in that unit has dropped out of the calculation.

What about an attempt where you are entered but do not turn up? Pearson's rule counts only non-absent attempts, so an absent entry does not push anything out. You lose the fee, not the result.

One more limit applies to Biology and Chemistry. Pearson is replacing both specifications, and its IAL key dates for the 2027 specifications show the current AS units running in January 2027, June 2027, October 2027 and January 2028, with January 2028 marked as resit only. Units from the old and new specifications cannot be mixed. So if you are resitting current AS units, you have four sittings left, and January 2027 is the first of them.

What does a 10-week plan to 8 January look like?

From late October to the first Biology paper on Friday 8 January is just over ten weeks, so work backwards from your first paper, not forwards from today: repair first, practise second, and finish with full papers under exam conditions.

Why backwards? Because your first paper date sets your deadline, not the start of the series. A Biology Unit 1 resit has to peak on 8 January. A Chemistry student has one more weekend, then Units 1 and 2 land on consecutive days, 11 and 12 January, so both have to be finished before the 11th.

Stage one: repair (weeks 1 to 4). Go back to the questions you wrote down in step one of the checklist. Group them by topic and by command word. In the practice papers my students hand in, they lose more marks by misreading what the question asks than by not knowing the content. If the question says explain, every statement needs a because. That is a marking point you cannot afford to lose twice.

Stage two: practise (weeks 5 to 8). Move to timed past-paper questions on the same topics, then mixed questions. For the practical papers, Unit 3 draws on the practicals from Units 1 and 2, and Unit 6 draws on every core practical from Units 1 to 5, so solve all the past papers from 2019 onwards.

Stage three: full papers (weeks 9 and 10). Sit complete papers to the clock, mark them against the mark scheme, and fix only what costs marks. No new content in the last fortnight.

If you would rather not build this alone, the free revision-plan form turns your unit and exam date into a week-by-week plan. For the teaching itself, the AS Biology course and the AS Chemistry course rebuild each unit around the mark schemes examiners work from. A single-unit course is $100, the full self-paced AS course is $250, live AS classes are $260, and the IAL solved past papers are $40. You get 15% off every IAL course, live class and solved-papers pack with code JAN27, until 30 November. You can also join a free class first to see how the lessons run. My IAL Biology and Chemistry eBooks are updated after every series against the latest mark schemes and examiner reports.

FAQ

Do I have to resit the whole AS or just one unit? Just the unit. Pearson lets IAL candidates resit one unit at a time, and your other units stay banked exactly as they are.

My October result is good, but I am already entered for January. What happens? If you have sat the unit only once before, a January attempt cannot pull it down, because the better of your two most recent attempts counts. After 14 November the fee is not refunded, and if you choose not to sit, the absent attempt is ignored.

Can I sit A2 units in the January 2027 series? Yes. Biology Units 4, 5 and 6 sit on 18, 20 and 22 January 2027, and Chemistry Units 4, 5 and 6 on 18, 21 and 22 January.

Does Pearson count my best IAL result or my latest one? Neither: it counts the better of your two most recent non-absent attempts under the same UCI. A third attempt can therefore push an older, stronger result out of the calculation.
